Mõõterõngaste, commonly known as measuring tapes, are flexible rulers used for determining lengths, distances, or dimensions. They typically consist of a narrow steel or fiberglass strip that can be concealed inside a sheath or rack. The strip is marked with metric and sometimes imperial units, enabling precise measurements for a variety of applications.

The concept of a flexible measuring device dates back to ancient civilizations, where leather or rope tied with markings served as rudimentary tapes. The modern metal-coated measuring tape emerged in the 19th century, dramatically improving accuracy and durability. Standard lengths for handheld tapes range from a few meters up to 12 meters (40 feet), with retractable versions used widely in construction, tailoring, and woodworking.

Materials used for the tape strip vary: low-carbon steel provides strength and resistance to bending, while fiberglass offers lighter weight and higher resistance to damp conditions. The outer sheath is usually made of rubber, plastic, or composite fibers to cushion the tape and allow smooth retraction.

Device design often includes a locking mechanism that holds the tape at a chosen length, a pin gauge to aid in radius determination, and a magnetic clip for ease of handling. Some advanced tapes incorporate digital readouts or laser-assisted measurements, enhancing accuracy for industrial or engineering tasks.

The measuring tape’s versatility makes it indispensable in fields such as construction, carpentry, tailoring, surveying, and automotive repair. Its durability and ease of use continue to make it a staple tool in both professional and home environments.
