Médiavilágs

Médiavilágs is a term used in Hungarian to refer to the Middle Ages. It encompasses the historical period in Europe between the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century and the beginning of the Renaissance in the 15th century. This era is characterized by significant societal, political, and cultural transformations.

During the Médiavilágs, feudalism became the dominant social and economic system. Lords granted land to vassals in exchange for military service and loyalty, creating a hierarchical structure. The Catholic Church played a central role in medieval life, influencing politics, culture, and everyday practices. Monasteries were centers of learning and preservation of knowledge.

Major events and developments of the Médiavilágs include the Viking Age, the Crusades, the rise of kingdoms and empires like the Holy Roman Empire, and the Black Death, which profoundly impacted European demographics and society. Art and architecture saw the development of Romanesque and Gothic styles, with magnificent cathedrals and castles being constructed.

The Médiavilágs is often divided into two periods: the Early Middle Ages (roughly 5th to 10th centuries) and the High and Late Middle Ages (roughly 11th to 15th centuries). It was a period of both conflict and innovation, laying the groundwork for many aspects of modern European civilization. The term itself, "Médiavilágs," is a direct Hungarian translation of "Middle Ages."
