Märkärjestelmät, often translated as wet systems, are a type of automatic fire sprinkler system. In a wet pipe system, the pipes are filled with water at all times. When a sprinkler head detects heat and opens, water is immediately discharged onto the fire. This makes wet pipe systems the most common and simplest type of sprinkler system, relying on a direct supply of water to suppress fires quickly. They are suitable for environments where the risk of freezing is not a concern.

The operation of a wet pipe system begins with the sprinkler head. Each head contains a heat-sensitive element, such as a glass bulb filled with liquid or a fusible link. When the temperature at the sprinkler head reaches a predetermined level, this element breaks or melts, opening the valve within the head. This allows pressurized water, which is constantly maintained in the piping, to flow out through the sprinkler orifice and onto the fire below. The flow of water also activates a water flow alarm, alerting occupants and emergency services.

Wet pipe sprinkler systems are widely used in residential buildings, offices, and many commercial establishments due to their reliability and cost-effectiveness. Their primary advantage is the immediate response to fire, as there is no delay in water delivery. However, their suitability is limited to areas that do not experience freezing temperatures, as the water in the pipes could freeze and damage the system or prevent its operation. Maintenance typically involves regular inspections of sprinkler heads, valves, and water supply to ensure optimal performance.
