Lýðræðilegt

Lýðræðilegt is an Icelandic adjective meaning democratic. It describes a system of government where supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections. The term derives from the Greek words demos, meaning people, and kratos, meaning rule.

In a lýðræðilegt system, citizens have the right to participate in the political process, express their opinions, and hold their leaders accountable. Key features often include the protection of civil liberties, such as freedom of speech, assembly, and the press, as well as the rule of law and an independent judiciary. The principle of equality is also central, meaning that all citizens have an equal voice and are treated equally under the law.

Lýðræðilegt forms of government can vary in their specific structures. Common examples include parliamentary republics, constitutional monarchies, and presidential republics. Regardless of the specific form, the core idea remains the same: that political authority originates from and is accountable to the people. The concept of lýðræðilegt is often contrasted with authoritarian or totalitarian regimes where power is concentrated in the hands of a single individual or a small group, and citizen participation is limited or non-existent.
