It is distinct from the indicative mood, which states facts.

This grammatical feature is particularly noticeable in relative clauses. Instead of using the indicative to describe a noun, Icelandic may employ the subjunctive to add a layer of generality, possibility, or hypothetical quality to the description. For example, a sentence might describe "a person who *might be* a doctor" using the subjunctive, implying a less certain or more general identification than stating "a person who *is* a doctor" with the indicative.

The descriptive form is not always a mandatory choice. The context and the speaker's intent often determine whether the indicative or subjunctive is used. However, its presence allows for a nuanced expression of characteristics and a subtle distancing from absolute factual statements.
