Lökéshullámokat, known in English as shock waves, are a phenomenon of rapid pressure change that propagates through a medium. They are characterized by a sudden increase in pressure, temperature, and density, followed by a gradual return to ambient conditions. Unlike sound waves, which are continuous and relatively gradual, shock waves are abrupt and involve a significant energy transfer.

These waves occur in various natural and man-made scenarios. Meteor impacts on Earth generate powerful shock waves. Explosions, both conventional and nuclear, create shock waves that can cause widespread destruction. In fluid dynamics, shock waves are formed when an object moves through a medium at supersonic speeds, exceeding the speed of sound in that medium. The distinctive sonic boom heard when a supersonic aircraft passes overhead is a direct result of shock waves.

In medicine, therapeutic shock waves are used to break up kidney stones and gallstones. This non-invasive procedure, known as extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), utilizes focused acoustic waves to fragment the stones into smaller pieces that can be naturally expelled from the body. Research is also ongoing into the potential applications of shock waves in treating other medical conditions, such as bone healing and wound regeneration. The study of shock waves is a complex field involving physics, engineering, and medicine, with ongoing research continually expanding our understanding and applications of this powerful phenomenon.
