Lõhkeseadmed, commonly referred to as explosives, are substances or devices designed to produce a rapid expansion of volume and energy, resulting in a violent explosion. This process is typically driven by a rapid chemical reaction or a physical phase change. Explosives are categorized into two main types: high explosives and low explosives. High explosives detonate, creating a supersonic shock wave that propagates through the material. Examples include dynamite, TNT, and C4. Low explosives, on the other hand, deflagrate, meaning they burn rapidly at subsonic speeds, producing a large volume of gas and pressure. Black powder is a classic example of a low explosive.

The primary applications of explosives are in military operations, such as demolition and ordnance, and in civilian industries like mining, quarrying, and construction for breaking up rock and earth. Explosives are also used in pyrotechnics for entertainment and signaling. Due to their inherent destructive potential, the manufacturing, storage, transportation, and use of explosives are subject to strict regulations and licensing in most countries. Safety protocols are paramount when handling these materials, involving specialized training, protective equipment, and controlled environments to mitigate the risks of accidental detonation or misuse.
