Lôme

Lomé, also written Lôme in French, is the capital and largest city of Togo. It sits on the Gulf of Guinea in the southern part of the country, near the border with Ghana. As the administrative, economic, and cultural center of Togo, Lomé hosts government ministries, foreign missions, regional institutions, the country’s main seaport, and the principal international airport.

Historically, the area was part of the Ewe-speaking region and became an important center during the German colonial period as Togoland. After World War I, the territory was divided between France and Britain, with Lomé serving as the capital of the French-administered Togoland. The area gained independence as Togo in 1960. Lomé has since been a focal point of Togolese politics and governance, including periods of political upheaval and regime change.
