The goal of an LCA is to identify the significant environmental burdens and opportunities for improvement throughout the product's existence.

The process typically involves several key stages. First, the goal and scope definition clearly outlines the purpose of the study and the boundaries of the product system being analyzed. This includes defining the functional unit, which is a measure of the function of the product system to be studied, and specifying the system boundaries. Second, an inventory analysis is conducted to collect data on all inputs and outputs of the system, such as energy consumption, water usage, emissions to air, water, and soil, and waste generation. Third, an impact assessment evaluates the potential environmental impacts associated with the identified inputs and outputs. This can include categories like climate change, ozone depletion, acidification, eutrophication, and resource depletion. Finally, interpretation of the results involves identifying significant issues, evaluating the completeness and consistency of the data, and drawing conclusions and recommendations.

LCA is a valuable tool for decision-making in various fields, including product design, environmental management, policy development, and consumer information.
