Légzfelület, also known as a "surface for breathing" or "breathing surface," refers to the anatomical structures in aquatic organisms that facilitate gas exchange between the organism and its environment. In biology, this term is most commonly associated with the gills of fish and other aquatic animals, though it can also apply to other respiratory surfaces found in various species.

In fish and similar vertebrates, gills are the primary organs responsible for extracting dissolved oxygen from water and expelling carbon dioxide. These structures are typically located on the sides of the head and are composed of numerous thin filaments called gill filaments or lamellae. Blood vessels within these filaments allow for efficient gas exchange through diffusion. Water flows over the gills in one direction, while blood flows in the opposite direction, maximizing oxygen uptake—a process known as countercurrent exchange.

Beyond fish, many invertebrates, such as crustaceans, mollusks, and some worms, also possess specialized gill-like structures for respiration. For example, crabs and lobsters have gills adapted to their terrestrial and aquatic lifestyles, while clams and snails use gills for both respiration and feeding. In some cases, these structures may be modified for additional functions, such as sensory perception or locomotion.

The effectiveness of a gill system depends on factors like surface area, blood flow, and the concentration of oxygen in the surrounding water. Environmental conditions, such as water pollution or temperature changes, can impact gill function, potentially leading to respiratory stress in aquatic organisms. Understanding the structure and function of gills is crucial for studying aquatic ecosystems, fisheries management, and the broader impacts of environmental changes on marine life.
