Lääkkeenkehitys, often translated as drug development, is the intricate process of discovering, testing, and gaining approval for new pharmaceutical drugs. This journey is lengthy, costly, and involves multiple stages, beginning with basic research to understand diseases and identify potential therapeutic targets. Once a target is identified, scientists embark on the search for candidate molecules that can interact with it. This discovery phase may involve screening large libraries of chemical compounds or designing molecules from scratch.

Following the discovery of promising candidate drugs, the next critical step is preclinical testing. This stage involves laboratory studies and animal testing to assess the drug's safety and efficacy before it can be tested in humans. If preclinical studies show favorable results, the drug enters clinical trials, which are divided into several phases. Phase I trials typically involve a small group of healthy volunteers to evaluate safety and dosage. Phase II trials expand to a larger group of patients with the target disease to assess efficacy and further monitor safety. Phase III trials are large-scale studies involving hundreds or even thousands of patients to confirm efficacy, monitor side effects, and compare the drug to existing treatments.

Upon successful completion of clinical trials, the drug manufacturer submits an application to regulatory authorities, such as the European Medicines Agency (EMA) or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for marketing approval. These agencies meticulously review all submitted data to determine if the drug is safe and effective for its intended use. If approved, the drug can be manufactured and prescribed to patients. The process does not end there, as post-market surveillance (Phase IV trials) continues to monitor the drug's long-term safety and effectiveness in the general population.
