It is a term used in the drug discovery and development process to denote a molecule that has advanced beyond initial screening but has not yet been fully proven safe and effective for widespread medical use.

The journey of a lääkekandidaatti typically begins with target identification and validation, followed by the discovery of potential drug molecules. These molecules are then subjected to rigorous laboratory testing, including in vitro assays and in vivo animal studies, to assess their pharmacological activity, toxicity, and pharmacokinetic properties.
