Throughput is different from capacity or latency: capacity is the maximum possible output, while latency is the time to complete a single item; throughput focuses on the actual flow of work or data over a period.

Measuring throughput involves counting how many units are completed in a given time window or how much data is successfully transferred or processed in a period. Common units include items per hour, transactions per second, or bytes per second. In practice, throughput is often averaged over a suitable interval to smooth short-term fluctuations and to reflect stable performance.
