Lämpötunnistus, or temperature sensing, refers to the process of measuring the temperature of an object or environment. This is a fundamental aspect of many scientific, industrial, and everyday applications. Various physical principles are utilized for temperature sensing, each with its own advantages and limitations.

One common method involves the change in electrical resistance of a material with temperature. Resistance thermometers, such as platinum resistance thermometers (PRTs), are known for their accuracy and stability over a wide temperature range. Thermistors are another type of resistance sensor that exhibits a larger change in resistance for a given temperature change, making them highly sensitive, though often less linear than PRTs.

Another principle is the generation of a voltage proportional to temperature. Thermocouples consist of two dissimilar metals joined at a junction. When this junction is at a different temperature than the other ends, a small voltage is produced, the magnitude of which depends on the temperature difference and the types of metals used. This makes them robust and suitable for high-temperature applications.

Infrared thermometers, or pyrometers, measure the thermal radiation emitted by an object without direct contact. This is particularly useful for measuring the temperature of moving objects, hazardous materials, or surfaces that are difficult to access. The intensity of infrared radiation is directly related to the object's temperature.

Other methods include bimetallic strips, which bend due to differential thermal expansion of two bonded metals, often used in simple thermostats, and liquid-in-glass thermometers, which rely on the thermal expansion of a liquid like mercury or alcohol within a calibrated tube. The choice of temperature sensing technology depends on factors such as the required accuracy, temperature range, response time, cost, and environmental conditions.
