Lämpötilatasoihin refers to layers of different temperatures within a body of water, such as a lake or the ocean. These layers are formed due to variations in water density, which is primarily influenced by temperature and salinity.

In many temperate lakes, a distinct thermal stratification occurs during the summer months. The upper layer, known as the epilimnion, is warmed by sunlight and is typically well-mixed by wind. Beneath this is the metalimnion, or thermocline, a transitional zone where the temperature drops rapidly with increasing depth. The deepest layer is the hypolimnion, which remains cold and relatively undisturbed throughout the summer.

This stratification significantly impacts aquatic ecosystems. The epilimnion, with its sunlight and warmth, is often rich in phytoplankton and zooplankton, forming the base of the food web. The hypolimnion, being colder and with less light penetration, supports different communities of organisms.

Seasonal changes, such as cooling temperatures in autumn and ice formation in winter, can disrupt this stratification. In autumn, the epilimnion cools, eventually becoming denser than the hypolimnion. This leads to a process called "turnover," where the entire water column mixes, distributing nutrients and oxygen throughout the lake. In winter, ice formation can create a reverse stratification, with the coldest water at the surface and slightly warmer, denser water at the bottom.
