These mechanisms utilize the physical properties of materials that change with temperature to initiate an action, adjust a setting, or signal a condition.

Common examples include thermostats in heating and cooling systems, which activate or deactivate the system to maintain a desired temperature range. Bimetallic strips are frequently employed in such devices; they consist of two different metals bonded together, which expand at different rates when heated, causing the strip to bend. This bending can be used to close or open an electrical circuit, thereby controlling a device.

Other applications of lämpötilakäyttöiset principles are found in thermal switches, which are safety devices designed to cut off power to an appliance if it overheats. Fire alarms often incorporate temperature sensors that trigger an alarm when a certain heat threshold is reached.
