Lämpösuojakerroksia

Lämpösuojakerroksia, also known as thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), are high-performance materials applied to surfaces to reduce heat transfer. They are commonly used in high-temperature environments, particularly in gas turbines and jet engines, to protect critical components from extreme thermal loads.

The primary function of a lämpösuojakerros is to act as an insulator, creating a temperature gradient between the hot gas stream and the underlying substrate material. This allows engine components, such as turbine blades and combustion chambers, to operate at higher temperatures, which in turn improves engine efficiency and performance. By reducing the operating temperature of the metal, TBCs also significantly extend the lifespan of these components, preventing premature failure due to creep and oxidation.

Lämpösuojakerroksia are typically composed of two main layers. The first is a bond coat, often made of an alloy like NiCoCrAlY, which adheres strongly to the metal substrate and provides oxidation resistance. The second, and outer layer, is the top coat, usually a ceramic material like yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). This ceramic layer is highly insulating and resistant to thermal shock.

The application of lämpösuojakerroksia is a specialized process, with common methods including electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) and atmospheric plasma spray (APS). These methods allow for the precise control of coating thickness and microstructure, which are critical for optimal thermal insulation and durability. Research continues to focus on developing even more advanced TBC materials and application techniques to meet the ever-increasing demands for higher operating temperatures and longer component life in aerospace and power generation industries.
