Lämpöreliefkäsittelyt, also known as thermal stress relieving, is a heat treatment process used to reduce or eliminate residual stresses in metallic materials. These stresses can arise from various manufacturing processes such as welding, casting, forging, machining, or cold working. Residual stresses can negatively impact the material's properties, leading to distortion, cracking, reduced fatigue life, and poor dimensional stability.

The primary goal of heat relief treatments is to soften the material enough to allow the stressed regions to relax and redistribute the internal stresses. This is typically achieved by heating the workpiece to a specific temperature, holding it at that temperature for a predetermined period, and then allowing it to cool slowly. The holding temperature is usually below the material's lower critical temperature but high enough to facilitate stress relaxation. Slow cooling is crucial to prevent the reintroduction of new thermal stresses as the material cools down.

The exact parameters for a heat relief treatment, including the heating temperature, soaking time, and cooling rate, depend on the type of metal, its alloy composition, the extent of the residual stresses, and the desired outcome. For some applications, a full annealing process might be used, while for others, a simpler stress-relieving anneal at a lower temperature is sufficient.

Heat relief treatments are widely applied across various industries, including aerospace, automotive, pressure vessel manufacturing, and construction, to enhance the reliability and longevity of metal components. By mitigating the detrimental effects of residual stresses, these treatments ensure that parts perform as intended and maintain their structural integrity throughout their service life.
