Lämpöoksidaatio, also known as thermal oxidation, is a chemical process involving the reaction of a material with oxygen at elevated temperatures. This process leads to the formation of oxides on the material's surface. The rate of thermal oxidation is dependent on several factors, including the temperature, the oxygen concentration, and the properties of the material being oxidized.

In materials science and engineering, thermal oxidation is often a crucial step in manufacturing and processing. For example, it is used in the semiconductor industry to create silicon dioxide (SiO2) layers on silicon wafers. These oxide layers serve as electrical insulators and are fundamental for the fabrication of integrated circuits. The process typically takes place in a furnace under controlled atmospheric conditions, often using dry oxygen or steam.

The thickness and quality of the oxide layer can be precisely controlled by adjusting the temperature, time, and atmosphere during the oxidation process. Different materials exhibit varying susceptibilities to thermal oxidation. Some metals, like iron, readily oxidize in the presence of heat and oxygen, forming rust. Others, like gold and platinum, are much more resistant to oxidation due to their low reactivity.
