Lämpöhysteresis

Lämpöhysteresis refers to the phenomenon where the thermal properties of a material depend on its past temperature history. When a material is subjected to a cycle of heating and cooling, its response may not follow the same path. This difference between the heating and cooling curves is known as hysteresis.

This effect can arise from various physical mechanisms. In some cases, it is due to phase transitions, where a material exists in different structural states depending on temperature. For example, certain polymers or alloys may exhibit different transition temperatures during heating compared to cooling. The energy required to initiate the transition in one direction may be different from that required to reverse it.

Another cause of lämpöhysteresis can be related to the rearrangement of internal structures within the material, such as the alignment of magnetic domains or the relaxation of internal stresses. These rearrangements can be slow and may not fully reverse upon cooling within a typical timeframe, leading to a residual effect.
