Lämpöemitanssi, sometimes referred to as thermal emissivity or simply emissivity, is a property of a material that describes its ability to radiate thermal energy. It is a dimensionless quantity that ranges from 0 to 1. A perfect emitter, known as a blackbody, has an emissivity of 1, meaning it absorbs all incident electromagnetic radiation and emits the maximum possible thermal radiation at a given temperature. Conversely, a material with an emissivity of 0 is a perfect reflector and does not emit any thermal radiation.

The value of thermal emissivity for a real material depends on several factors, including the material's composition, its surface characteristics (such as roughness and texture), and the temperature of the material. For example, polished metal surfaces tend to have low emissivity, while dull or oxidized surfaces generally have higher emissivity. Similarly, non-metallic materials like paints, ceramics, and organic substances often exhibit high emissivity.

Thermal emissivity plays a crucial role in various scientific and engineering applications. In thermodynamics, it is a key parameter in calculating radiative heat transfer between surfaces. For instance, understanding the emissivity of different materials is essential in designing efficient insulation systems, solar collectors, and thermal imaging cameras. In astrophysics, the emissivity of celestial objects helps astronomers determine their surface temperatures and compositions. The concept is also important in fields like remote sensing, where surface temperatures are inferred from emitted thermal radiation.
