Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is a prominent thermal analysis technique. It measures the difference in heat flow between a sample and a reference material as they are heated or cooled. This allows for the detection of thermal events such as melting, crystallization, glass transitions, and chemical reactions, and can quantify the associated energy changes. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is another important method, which measures the change in mass of a sample as it is heated or cooled. TGA is used to study decomposition, oxidation, and dehydration processes, providing information about the thermal stability and composition of materials.

Other common thermal analysis techniques include thermomechanical analysis (TMA), which measures dimensional changes with temperature, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), which evaluates the viscoelastic properties of materials. These methods collectively provide a comprehensive understanding of how materials respond to thermal stimuli, aiding in material selection, process optimization, and quality control across various industries, including polymers, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, and metallurgy.
