Lämpöaisti

Lämpöaisti, often translated as thermal sense or temperature sensation, is the perception of heat and cold. It is a somatosensory system that allows humans and other animals to detect the temperature of their environment and their own bodies. This sense is crucial for survival, enabling organisms to avoid extreme temperatures that could cause harm.

The detection of temperature is primarily mediated by specialized sensory receptors in the skin called thermoreceptors. These are free nerve endings of sensory neurons that respond to specific temperature ranges. There are distinct types of thermoreceptors, some sensitive to heat and others to cold. When these receptors are stimulated by a change in temperature, they send signals to the brain via the nervous system.

The brain then processes these signals, creating the conscious perception of warmth or coolness. This perception is not solely dependent on the absolute temperature but also on the rate of temperature change and the contrast with the body's core temperature. For instance, a surface that feels warm might actually be at room temperature if the body is cold, and vice versa.

It also contributes to our ability to interact safely with our surroundings, allowing us to withdraw from hot objects or seek warmth when cold.
