Lämmönsäilyttäjä, often translated as heat retainer or thermal mass, is a concept and material application focused on absorbing, storing, and slowly releasing heat. This property is utilized in various fields, most notably in building design and energy efficiency. Materials with high thermal mass, such as concrete, brick, stone, and water, can absorb significant amounts of heat during warmer periods or when exposed to heat sources like sunlight. They then release this stored heat gradually as the ambient temperature drops.

In architecture, lämmönsäilyttäjä plays a crucial role in passive solar design. Buildings incorporating ample thermal mass can effectively moderate indoor temperature fluctuations. During the day, walls and floors absorb solar heat, preventing overheating. At night, as temperatures fall, the stored heat is released back into the living space, reducing the need for artificial heating. This natural regulation contributes to improved occupant comfort and lower energy consumption for heating and cooling.

In industrial processes, thermal energy storage systems often utilize materials with high thermal mass to store excess heat for later use, improving overall system efficiency.
