Lähitietoliikenne, often translated as Near Field Communication (NFC), is a set of communication protocols that enables two electronic devices to establish a radio connection by bringing them within a few centimeters of each other. This technology operates on a frequency of 13.56 MHz and is based on RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) principles. NFC allows for the secure and convenient exchange of data between devices, such as smartphones, payment terminals, and access cards.

The primary applications of NFC technology include contactless payments, where users can tap their NFC-enabled phones or cards to make purchases. It is also widely used for access control, allowing individuals to unlock doors or gain entry to secure areas by presenting an NFC device. Other common uses involve data sharing, such as exchanging contact information or website links by simply tapping two devices together. NFC can also be employed for pairing devices, like connecting Bluetooth headphones to a smartphone with a simple touch. The short communication range is a key security feature, as it requires close proximity for a connection to be established, reducing the risk of unauthorized access.
