Lymphüberladung

Lymphüberladung refers to a condition where the lymphatic system is overwhelmed with fluid and waste products. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and nodes that plays a crucial role in fluid balance, immune function, and the removal of metabolic byproducts. When this system becomes overloaded, it can lead to a buildup of lymph fluid, a condition known as lymphedema.

Several factors can contribute to lymphüberladung. These include blockages or damage to lymphatic vessels, such as those caused by surgery, radiation therapy, infection, or trauma. In some cases, the lymphatic system may be underdeveloped or malformed from birth, leading to primary lymphedema. Secondary lymphedema is more common and arises from damage to a previously healthy lymphatic system.

Symptoms of lymphüberladung can vary but often include swelling, typically in an arm or leg, but it can occur in other parts of the body as well. This swelling may be accompanied by feelings of heaviness, tightness, or discomfort in the affected area. Skin changes, such as thickening or hardening, can also develop over time. The affected limb may also be more susceptible to infections.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. Imaging techniques, such as lymphoscintigraphy or ultrasound, may be used to assess lymphatic function and identify blockages. Treatment aims to reduce swelling, improve lymphatic drainage, and prevent complications. This often involves manual lymphatic drainage, a specialized massage technique, compression therapy, and exercise. Managing infections is also a key aspect of treatment.
