Lycaean

Lycaean refers to something associated with Mount Lykaion in Arcadia, Greece. Historically, Mount Lykaion was a sacred mountain dedicated to Zeus Lykaios, a pre-eminent Olympian deity. The name "Lykaean" is derived from the Greek word "lykos," meaning wolf. This etymology has led to various interpretations and associations with wolves and wolf-like figures in ancient Greek mythology and cult practices.

One prominent association is the legend of Lycaon, the mythical king of Arcadia, who was said to have sacrificed a child to Zeus and was subsequently transformed into a wolf. This myth, recounted by authors like Ovid, is often cited as a source of the term Lycaean and its connection to lycanthropy, or the transformation of humans into wolves. Ancient rituals performed on Mount Lykaion were reportedly linked to appeasing Zeus and may have involved rites that, according to some accounts, could induce a wolf-like state or were symbolically associated with wolves.
