Lusail

Lusail is a planned city in Qatar, located on the coast north of Doha in the Al Daayen municipality. It is one of the country’s largest development projects and is intended to become a major urban center linking Doha with the northern coast.

The project was announced in 2004 and developed by Qatari Diar. Construction began in the mid-2000s and proceeds in phases. The city is designed to house residential, commercial, hospitality, and cultural facilities, with a projected population around 200,000 to 250,000.

Lusail is organized into districts such as the Marina District along the waterfront and the Qetaifan Island precinct with leisure venues. The seaside esplanade, marinas, and planned parks are central elements of the master plan, which emphasizes a walkable, waterfront living environment with integrated green space.

Notable landmarks include Lusail Stadium, an 80,000-seat venue built to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, alongside other recreational and retail facilities. The city also features a range of entertainment, hospitality, and residential offerings designed to attract residents and visitors.

Transportation and connectivity: The city is planned to be linked to Doha by an expanded highway network and an integrated public transit system, including a light-rail tram network and connections to the Doha Metro. This aims to provide mass transit access across the city and to the wider metropolitan area.

Status and outlook: Several areas have opened to residents and visitors, while development continues in phases. Lusail remains a flagship element of Qatar’s urban planning strategy, focusing on sustainability, mixed-use development, and modern infrastructure.
