Lupfen

Lupfen is a geological term referring to a type of fracture or fault in rock formations. Specifically, it denotes a joint or fissure that is open and not filled with any secondary material. These fractures can occur in various types of rock, including sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. Lupfen are typically caused by tensile stress, which can arise from tectonic forces, unloading due to erosion, or the cooling and contraction of igneous rocks.

The formation of lupfen is a gradual process. Initially, small cracks begin to form within the rock mass. As stress continues to be applied, these cracks propagate and widen, eventually becoming visible as open fissures.
