Luminance contrast refers to the difference in luminance between two regions of a scene or image. Luminance is the perceptual brightness of light per unit area, typically measured in candela per square meter (cd/m^2). The amount of contrast between elements affects how easily they are distinguished and read, making luminance contrast a key factor in visual perception, display design, signage, and accessibility. Contrast can be quantified in several ways. Weber contrast is the relative difference between a target and its background: (L_target - L_background) / L_background. Michelson contrast compares two luminances as (L_max - L_min) / (L_max + L_min). For web and document accessibility, the recommended contrast ratio is (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05), where L1 is the higher luminance and L2 is the lower. Luminances are measured in cd/m^2, and the calculation assumes consistent viewing conditions and observer adaptation.

Measurement and usage involve instruments such as luminance meters or photometers, calibrated under defined viewing conditions (ambient light, angle, and color temperature). Gamma correction, display characteristics, and surrounding context influence perceived luminance, so practical assessment often requires controlled testing and real-world validation.

Applications include user interface and typography design, digital displays, signage, and accessibility compliance. Standards such as WCAG guidance specify minimum contrast thresholds (for example, about 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text) to improve readability for people with visual impairments. While luminance contrast is crucial, it is complemented by color contrast and other perceptual factors that together determine overall legibility.
