Lumijoki

Lumijoki is a village situated in the municipality of Pielisjärvi in the Northern Savonia region of Finland. The settlement lies in a forested area characterized by gently rolling hills and numerous small lakes. The name Lumijoki, literally meaning “snow river” in Finnish, reflects the area's abundant snowfall during winter months and the presence of a modest stream that flows through the village.

Historically, Lumijoki was established as an independent municipality in 1866. It remained a separate administrative unit until 1973, when it was merged with the neighboring municipality of Pielisjärvi. During its time as a municipality, Lumijoki had a population that peaked at around 750 residents in the early 1900s, but by the 1970s the number had declined to approximately 380 due to urban migration and changes in the local economy.

The local economy has traditionally revolved around forestry, with many residents employed in logging and timber processing. Small-scale agriculture also plays a role, primarily focused on dairy and poultry farming. In recent decades, tourism has become an increasingly important sector, with visitors attracted by the area's natural beauty, winter sports activities, and cultural events such as the annual Lumijoki Snow Festival, which features sledding races, ice sculpting, and local crafts.

Infrastructure in Lumijoki includes a primary school, a community center, and a volunteer fire department. Transportation access is provided by a regional road that connects the village to the larger town of Savonlinna, and a bus service facilitates travel for residents and tourists alike. The community remains small and close-knit, preserving traditional Finnish customs while gradually adapting to contemporary economic and social changes.
