Lukkoja are devices that secure openings by preventing unauthorized access. They are used on doors, gates, safes, and containers, and include a wide range of mechanisms from simple padlocks to sophisticated electronic systems. They can be mechanical, relying on physical barriers and keys, or electronic, using codes, cards, or wireless credentials.

History traces early warded devices to antiquity and medieval periods, with modern pin-tumbler designs popularized in the 19th century by manufacturers such as Yale. Since then, locks have evolved to higher-security forms and to electronic systems that offer remote control and audit trails.

Security and safety considerations include resistance to picking, bumping, drilling, and forced entry, as well as key control and maintenance. Standards such as ANSI/BHMA and EN 1303 assess performance. Regular maintenance includes cleaning, appropriate lubrication, and timely replacement of worn parts.
