Ltungis

Ltungis is a genus of extinct marine reptiles belonging to the ichthyosaur group, which lived during the Late Triassic period, approximately 228 to 208 million years ago. Fossils of Ltungis have been found primarily in what is now China, specifically in the Carnian to Norian stages of the Triassic. The genus was named by paleontologist Da-Li-Tung.

The remains of Ltungis indicate that these creatures were medium-sized ichthyosaurs, with estimated lengths of around 2 to 3 meters. They possessed the characteristic streamlined body shape typical of ichthyosaurs, adapted for efficient swimming in marine environments. Their limbs were modified into paddle-like flippers, and they likely had a dorsal fin and a powerful tail for propulsion. The skull of Ltungis was elongated, suggesting a diet of fish and invertebrates, which they would have captured using their sharp teeth.

Ltungis represents an important part of the ichthyosaur evolutionary tree, offering insights into the diversification and adaptations of these marine reptiles during the Triassic, a period of significant environmental change. Its discovery has contributed to our understanding of the paleobiogeography and evolutionary history of ichthyosaurs in Asia.
