Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, later known as Napoleon III, was the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte and the first and only President of the Second French Republic, as well as the last monarch of France. Born in Paris in 1808, he spent much of his early life in exile, primarily in England and Switzerland, due to the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy. He harbored a deep fascination with his uncle's legacy and sought to restore France's imperial glory.

After the revolution of 1848, Louis-Napoléon returned to France and was elected President in December of that year. His presidency was marked by a period of political maneuvering and consolidation of power. In 1851, he staged a coup d'état, dissolving the National Assembly and establishing himself as ruler. A year later, he declared himself Emperor Napoleon III, initiating the Second French Empire.

His reign saw significant industrialization, infrastructure development, and colonial expansion. He modernized Paris, oversaw the construction of canals and railways, and supported the arts and sciences. However, his foreign policy was often ambitious and ultimately led to costly conflicts, most notably the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. This war resulted in a decisive French defeat, the capture of Napoleon III, and the collapse of the Second Empire. He was deposed and exiled to England, where he died in 1873. His legacy remains a complex one, characterized by both progress and authoritarian rule.
