Lossless Ethernet Funktionen refers to a set of technologies and protocols designed to ensure that data packets are not dropped or corrupted during transmission over an Ethernet network. This is particularly critical for applications where even minor data loss can have significant consequences, such as in high-performance computing, financial trading, and industrial automation. Traditional Ethernet is a "best-effort" delivery system, meaning it does not guarantee that packets will arrive at their destination. Lossless Ethernet aims to overcome this limitation.

Key components of lossless Ethernet include Priority Flow Control (PFC), which is defined in IEEE 802.1Qbb. PFC allows network devices to pause traffic on specific priority classes, preventing buffer overflows and subsequent packet loss. Another important aspect is Enhanced Transmission Selection (ETS), specified in IEEE 802.1Qaz, which enables the prioritization of different types of traffic, ensuring that critical data receives preferential treatment. These mechanisms work together to create a more reliable and predictable network environment.

The implementation of lossless Ethernet requires support from both network interface cards (NICs) and network switches. Proper configuration and tuning are also essential to achieve optimal performance. While these features introduce some overhead and complexity, the benefits of guaranteed data delivery often outweigh these considerations for demanding applications. The goal is to provide the reliability traditionally associated with storage area networks (SANs) over standard Ethernet infrastructure.
