Longyearbreen

Longyearbreen is a glacier located on the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago, Norway. It is situated in the Adventdalen valley, near the settlement of Longyearbyen. The glacier's name is derived from John Longyear, an American businessman who was a principal investor in the Arctic Coal Company, the precursor to the Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulgrube Company, which historically mined coal in the area.

The glacier originates from the mountains surrounding Adventdalen and flows generally northwards, eventually calving into the Adventfjorden. Longyearbreen is a tidewater glacier, meaning its terminus meets the sea. This characteristic can lead to significant ice loss through calving events, where large pieces of ice break off and form icebergs.

Historically, Longyearbreen has been a subject of scientific interest, particularly in relation to its glacial dynamics and its response to climate change. Like many glaciers in the Arctic, Longyearbreen has been observed to be retreating and thinning over recent decades, consistent with rising global temperatures.
