Longmoor

Longmoor is a hill in the New Forest National Park, located in southwestern England. It is situated approximately 3 miles east southeast of the village of Brockenhurst. The hill rises to an elevation of around 296 feet above sea level and covers an area of approximately 384 acres.

Geologically, Longmoor is a region of heathland and acid grassland, characterized by shallow soils and low nutrient levels. The area is dominated by heather (Erica spp.) and gorse (Ulex spp.), with scattered pockets of pine (Pinus spp.) and scrub woodland. The site is of particular interest due to its composition of rare and protected plant species, including the eastern betony (Stachys officinalis) and the linnet (Carduelis cannabina).

Longmoor has a long history of human habitation and land use, dating back to the Bronze Age. Archaeological finds suggest that the area was used for both living and farming. Later, during the Roman period, the site was abandoned and returned to natural processes. In the 19th century, a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael was established on the northern slopes of the hill, coinciding with increasing land use for livestock production.

Today, Longmoor remains a significant area of wildlife habitat and recreational interest, attracting visitors and protecting its unique biodiversity. Management of the site is undertaken by the land trust in partnership with local authorities, aiming to preserve this native landscape for future generations. The area has been conserved as an essential part of the New Forest National Park, allowing for its unique character to persist.
