The term is widely used across domains such as entertainment, sports, business, and technology. What counts as running can differ: some definitions require continuous operation, while others count total elapsed time since inception including breaks, relaunches, or rebrands. Because of these definitional differences, comparisons are often specific to a defined scope, such as “longest-running television program in the United States” or “longest-running stage musical in London.”

Record-keeping and verification typically rely on official sources, archives, and compendia such as Guinness World Records, which maintain lists of longest-running programs, productions, and institutions. Determinations depend on precise start dates, legitimate continuations, and whether revivals or name changes reset the clock. Some cases distinguish between a production’s original run and subsequent revivals, while others treat them as a single continuous lineage. Accessibility and changes in format (theater, broadcast, streaming) can affect whether a title qualifies.

In media and culture, several notable entries illustrate the concept. The Simpsons, which began in 1989 and continues to air new episodes, is often cited as one of the longest-running American animated programs. The Today Show began in 1952 and remains on air as a long-running morning news program. In live theater, long-running productions such as Les Misérables have sustained performances across decades in major cities.
