Lommatzsch

Lommatzsch is a municipality in the district of Meißen, located in the Free State of Saxony, Germany. It lies approximately 16 kilometres (10 miles) north of the city of Meißen and about 25 kilometres (15 miles) north of the capital city of Dresden. The village sits on the lower reaches of the Elbe River and is part of the larger Elbe valley region.

The territory of Lommatzsch covers an area of roughly 25 square kilometres (10 square miles). The municipality is subdivided into three Ortsteile (localities): the central village of Lommatzsch, the hamlet of Mühlrose, and the community of Zinnowitz. The elevation ranges from 37 to 63 metres (122–207 feet) above sea level, placing the area on relatively flat riverine landscape that is well suited to agriculture.

Historically, Lommatzsch dates back to the early Middle Ages, first recorded in the year 1224, when it belonged to the ecclesiastical estate of the Augustinian monastery at Kaiserswerth. During the Prussian administration in the 19th century the village was integrated into the district of Freital. The region experienced notable growth during the industrialisation of the 1800s, with the establishment of small textile mills and the development of local railway connections as part of the Leipzig–Meißen railway line in 1844.

The contemporary population of Lommatzsch is around 4,400 residents, with a population density of approximately 176 inhabitants per square kilometre (457 per square mile). The local economy is primarily driven by small and medium-sized enterprises in manufacturing, services and agribusiness, with many residents commuting to nearby industrial hubs in Meißen and Dresden for work.

Culturally, Lommatzsch hosts a number of community events, including the annual summer festival “Sommerfest in der Elbe” and the “Heiligen Abendmarkt” on Christmas Eve. The landscape is marked by historic structures such as the Baroque church of St. George, the 18th‑century Mühlrose mill, and several well‑preserved manor houses. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining the Elbe valley’s unique ecological and cultural heritage.
