Lizenzpool

Lizenzpool is a concept in software license management describing a centralized pool of license entitlements that can be allocated to users or devices as needed. The term is used in enterprise environments to improve utilization, simplify compliance, and increase flexibility in license consumption.

Definition and operation: A license pool aggregates licenses from multiple products into a common repository, managed by a license server or software asset management system. Licenses in the pool are not permanently bound to a specific user or machine; instead, they are dynamically assigned and released based on demand, often using floating or concurrent licensing models. When a user starts a licensed application, the system checks the pool for available licenses and assigns one if possible. When the session ends, the license is returned to the pool. This enables multiple concurrent users to share a fixed number of licenses, reducing over-provisioning but requiring accurate tracking to avoid violations.

Models and terms: The most common form is floating or concurrent licensing, but fixed licenses can also participate in a pool if they are reallocated when not in use. Entitlements, activations, and compliance rules vary by vendor and contract.

Advantages and challenges: Benefits include higher utilization, easier scaling, centralized management, and location-spanning access.
