The cervix also plays a role in childbirth. During labor, the cervix dilates and effaces, allowing the baby to pass through the birth canal. After childbirth, the cervix closes and heals, returning to its normal state. In some cases, the cervix may be removed during a hysterectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the uterus.
