Lithiationdelithiation is the reversible uptake and release of lithium ions by a host material, most commonly observed in energy storage systems such as lithium-ion batteries. The term encompasses lithiation, the insertion of Li+ ions and accompanying electrons into a material, and delithiation, the extraction of Li+ ions as charging or discharging proceeds.

Two principal mechanisms are recognized. Intercalation lithiation involves Li+ entering existing crystal frameworks with only minor structural changes, preserving the overall lattice. Alloying or conversion lithiation, by contrast, entails chemical reactions between lithium and the host that form new phases, often accompanied by substantial volume changes and distinct electrochemical signatures. Delithiation reverses these processes, returning lithium to the electrolyte and restoring part of the original structure, though not always with perfect reversibility.

Materials commonly associated with lithiationdelithiation include graphite and layered transition metal oxides for intercalation processes, as well as silicon, germanium, and tin for alloying-type lithiation in anodes. In some solid-state approaches, lithiationdelithiation is used to tune Li content to access Li-rich or Li-deficient phases, thereby modifying electronic structure and redox behavior.

The phenomenon is central to battery performance, influencing energy density, voltage profiles, and cycle life. Challenges include irreversible capacity loss due to side reactions and dead lithium, mechanical degradation from large volume changes (notably in alloying anodes), and safety concerns in high-energy or metallic lithium systems. Understanding lithiationdelithiation informs material design and optimization of reaction pathways during cycling.

Characterization tools such as cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic cycling, X-ray diffraction, and operando spectroscopy are employed to study lithiation-delithiation dynamics, including phase transitions, diffusion kinetics, and structural evolution within electrodes.
