Lisääntymisteknologiat, often referred to as assisted reproductive technologies (ART), encompass a range of medical procedures and techniques used to help individuals and couples overcome infertility and achieve pregnancy. These technologies have revolutionized reproductive medicine, offering hope to many who previously faced limited options.

The most common ART procedure is in vitro fertilization (IVF). This process involves retrieving eggs from a woman's ovaries and fertilizing them with sperm in a laboratory setting. The resulting embryo is then transferred to the woman's uterus with the hope of implantation and pregnancy. Other ART methods include intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg, and gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) and zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT), which involve transferring eggs and sperm or fertilized eggs into the fallopian tubes.

ART can be utilized by individuals facing various fertility challenges, such as blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm count or motility, ovulation disorders, endometriosis, and unexplained infertility. It can also be an option for same-sex couples or single individuals who wish to have children.

While ART offers significant benefits, it is also associated with certain considerations. Success rates vary depending on factors such as age, the cause of infertility, and the specific clinic. Multiple pregnancies are a possibility, which carries increased risks. Furthermore, ART procedures can be emotionally and financially demanding. Ethical and societal discussions surrounding ART, including issues of access, donor gametes, and embryo selection, continue to evolve.
