Lisäluokkia

Lisäluokkia is a Finnish term referring to small, supplementary classes or groups formed within schools to provide targeted instruction beyond the regular class. They are designed to address varied learning needs, support students who require additional practice, and offer enrichment for advanced learners.

Typically organized as small groups within the school day, lisäluokkia are taught by teachers, often by special education staff, and are part of the school's pedagogical plan. They can cover remedial teaching in core subjects, language and literacy support, and additional help for pupils with achievement gaps, as well as acceleration or enrichment for capable pupils.

Decisions about establishing lisäluokkia are made by the school's leadership in accordance with municipal guidelines and available resources. Assessments and ongoing monitoring guide placement and group size. Parents are informed; participation may require consent depending on the local policy.

The overarching aim of lisäluokkia is to promote equity and inclusion by offering personalized support within the regular school framework, rather than through prolonged separation from the main class.
