Lisoi

Lisoi refers to a type of traditional Fijian loincloth. Historically, it was worn by both men and women. The material used for lisoi varied, but it was commonly made from masi, a barkcloth produced from the paper mulberry tree. The process of creating masi involved beating the bark until it was thin and pliable, then decorating it with intricate patterns.

The style and ornamentation of a lisoi could indicate the wearer's social status, age, or the occasion for which it was worn. For ceremonial purposes, lisoi were often elaborately decorated and made from particularly fine masi. Over time, the use of lisoi has declined with the introduction of Western clothing. However, it remains a significant cultural artifact in Fiji, often still seen during traditional ceremonies, dances, and important cultural events. The production and wearing of lisoi are part of preserving Fijian heritage and identity. Contemporary interpretations of lisoi may also incorporate other fabrics and designs while retaining the spirit of the traditional garment.
