Lisanduvatestien

Lisanduvatestien, also known as Lisanduvastin, is a medication used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. It belongs to a class of drugs called PCSK9 inhibitors, which work by blocking the action of a protein called proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9). PCSK9 plays a role in the body's natural process of breaking down low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which is often referred to as "bad" cholesterol. By inhibiting PCSK9, lisanduvastien helps to increase the levels of LDL receptors on the surface of liver cells, thereby promoting the removal of LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream.

Lisanduvastien is typically prescribed as an adjunct to diet and exercise to manage high cholesterol levels. It is available in tablet form and is usually taken once daily. Common side effects may include muscle pain, back pain, and injection site reactions. Serious side effects are rare but can include pancreatitis, muscle injury, and increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

The medication was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017 for the treatment of homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH), a rare genetic disorder characterized by extremely high levels of LDL cholesterol. It is also indicated for the treatment of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) and for the reduction of LDL cholesterol in patients with acute coronary syndrome who are at high risk of recurrent events.

Lisanduvastien is not recommended for patients with a personal or family history of muscle disorders, as it may increase the risk of muscle injury. It should also be used with caution in patients with a history of pancreatitis or liver disease. As with any medication, patients should discuss the potential benefits and risks with their healthcare provider before starting lisanduvastien.
