Common causes of liver damage include viral hepatitis (Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E), alcoholic liver disease resulting from excessive alcohol consumption, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) often associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome, and autoimmune diseases where the body's immune system attacks liver cells. Symptoms of liver damage can vary widely depending on the severity and cause. Early stages may be asymptomatic. As damage progresses, individuals might experience fatigue, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), abdominal pain and swelling, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. More advanced conditions can lead to liver failure, characterized by confusion, bleeding, and coma.

Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to assess liver function, imaging studies like ultrasound or CT scans, and sometimes a liver biopsy for definitive diagnosis. Treatment strategies depend on the underlying cause and can include lifestyle modifications, medications to manage the condition, antiviral therapies, or in severe cases, liver transplantation. Early detection and appropriate management are crucial for improving outcomes and preventing irreversible damage.
