Lipidlerakódások, also known as lipid deposition or lipid accumulation, refers to the process by which lipids, or fats, are stored within cells and tissues. This is a normal physiological process essential for energy storage, insulation, and the formation of cell membranes. However, excessive or abnormal lipidlerakódások can lead to various pathological conditions.

In healthy individuals, adipocytes, or fat cells, are the primary sites for lipid storage. These cells are designed to store triglycerides, a type of fat derived from dietary sources or synthesized within the body. When energy intake exceeds energy expenditure, these triglycerides are stored. Conversely, when the body needs energy, stored triglycerides are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol, which are then released into the bloodstream.

For instance, lipids can accumulate in liver cells, leading to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), or in muscle cells, contributing to insulin resistance. Macrophages, a type of immune cell, can engulf lipids, becoming foam cells, which are characteristic features of atherosclerotic plaques in blood vessels. Understanding the mechanisms of lipidlerakódások is crucial for developing therapeutic strategies to manage metabolic diseases.
