Their work centers on variational inequalities, a mathematical framework for problems where the solution is constrained to lie in a closed convex set, reflecting unilateral constraints such as obstacles or physical contact.

The core result, often called the Lions–Stampacchia theorem, provides an existence guarantee for solutions to elliptic variational inequalities. In a Hilbert space setting, with a closed convex nonempty constraint set and a continuous, coercive bilinear form together with a continuous linear functional, there exists a function in the constraint set that satisfies a variational inequality of the form: the bilinear form evaluated at the solution against any admissible compare function is at least as large as the linear functional evaluated at that difference. This abstract formulation includes concrete problems such as the obstacle problem, where the solution must stay above an obstacle, and various boundary-contact problems in elasticity.
