Different materials possess unique optical properties that determine how light will interact with them, including refractive index, dispersion, and transparency.

Glass has been a traditional and widely used material for lenses. Optical glass is specifically manufactured to have very precise and consistent optical qualities. Its advantages include excellent scratch resistance, durability, and optical clarity. However, glass lenses can be heavy and are susceptible to breaking if dropped.

Plastics, particularly polymers like polycarbonate and acrylic, have become increasingly popular for lenses. Plastic lenses are significantly lighter than glass, making them more comfortable for eyeglasses. They also offer superior impact resistance, which is a major safety advantage. While earlier plastic lenses had a tendency to scratch more easily, modern coatings have greatly improved their durability. Furthermore, plastic materials can be more easily molded into complex shapes and can incorporate UV-blocking properties inherently.

Other specialized materials are used for specific optical applications. For instance, crystals like sapphire or quartz are employed in high-performance optics due to their extreme hardness and resistance to harsh environments. Germanium is often used for infrared lenses because it is transparent to a wide range of infrared wavelengths. The development of new optical materials continues to push the boundaries of optical technology, enabling the creation of lenses with enhanced performance and novel functionalities.
